Behind Glass Corp. Identity

Behind Glass Real Client Corp. Identity

For a recent assignment we were given the task of designing and working on corporate identity for a real client. We had to find a client with an already existing business, which we could re-design their identity or a new business that we could give them an identity.

It was our job to act professional and liaise with the client to create designs fitted around what the client wanted. . The work we created did not have to be used by the client, the main focus of the assessment was to gain an understanding and experience of working with a real client and what work may be like once we are no longer students.

My clients were starting a picture framing business in my home town. They were focusing on opening sometime in January next year and wanted to get a feel and identity for their new business.

I started this process by having an initial meeting with the clients on July 16th. Here we discussed what would take place, the name of the business (Behind Glass), what they were looking for, what type of business they had and were working towards and if they had any ideas for me to work from.

After this meeting I started my research. I started by looking at other business of the same genre. I looked at logos, identity’s, colours, shapes, websites and presentation. I also looked at picture framing business in out are which could be competition. I did this as I thought it would be good to have a different look to the competition.

I then had another meeting with the clients about a week later and I showed them existing businesses logos and websites. I also wrote the business name Behind Glass, in many different fonts to give the client an idea of how much the right font mattered in designing a logo and the different feels each font had. They told me what they liked from these and started to get ideas for the feel they wanted. They wanted subtle colour, marrons, gold, green or blues. They liked the clean corporate look, but also something interesting. One of the logos incorporated a gradient banner which the clients loved and would like to work into their businesses identity.

ON the 27th I had another meeting with the client and discussed some logos I had designed using the information from the clients. I did these logos in black and white and also provided the clients with some colour options I thought would work well. They clients picked the logos they liked and which ones they wanted to see in colour. They also asked if they could see the logo incorporated in something like a business card.

I took this information and created the logos with colour. I then did some simple mock-up business cards and emailed this information to the client on July 29th. I got a reply on the 1st of August and a meeting was arranged for the next evening to discuss the logos and business cards.
A logo was chosen and a card design. The logo was the business name written in a Futura Light, a sans serif font, backed by a faded BG on a pantone blue gradient banner. A vertical business card was chose but the client wanted to see it with a vertical gradient. After I had made these changes I emailed it to the clients on the 3rd of August. The clients were very happy and this made it easier to start work on the other products.

I started work on some letterheads and emailed these to the client on the 17th.
This is where communication between myself and the client became quite difficult. After almost two weeks with no replay I sent another email on the 28th asking if they had received my previous email and if they had any feedback. I realise that people can be very busy and that my clients were in no rush to start their business, but it can get quite frustrating when the client does not reply and you have nothing to work with.

I kept working on the identity and designed a with compliments slip and an envelope. This gave me five products.

After many more emails, phone calls and arranged meetings eventually five products were chosen. I liked all the ones chose and thought they worked well together. The feel of the business was to be corporate and clean. I think I achieved this. The clients were very happy with the final product and so was I.

I found this task very interesting and also exciting. It was great to work with a real client and make something for a real business with the possibility of it being used. I also found it stressful as I wanted to create the best products I could as they could be seen in public and by possible future employees. The hardest part of this process was the communication with my client. There were many unanswered emails. Meetings were arranged and when I rang to confirm there was no answer of the meeting had been forgotten. I also saw my clients and asked for feedback or to arrange meetings and this never happened. There was a long amount of time with no real feedback or lack of interest from the client. I am not sure why this happened but it was quite frustrating as a had a due date for the assessment task and wanted to have everything finished for this date.

Overall I feel I did well because the clients were happy and wanted to use my designs and I think if you have pleased the clients and fulfilled the brief then you have done well.

Underage sex. It's not fun. Basic mock-ups

Underage sex. It's not fun.

We have been asked in class to design a campaign that will “change the world”. The campaign had to have an impact, make a change or have an effect on people or the target market and be about a social trend or issue.

I decided to look into underage teenage sexual activity and it’s consequences. I kept hearing stories in the media about 13 and 14 year old girls have babies, even 15 year olds in my own small home town. I wanted to look into this more and discover why teens this young were exploring sexual activities.

I wanted to also make teens in general more aware of the consequences of sex and unprotected sex.

I started by doing research into teen sex, sexually transmitted infections, unprotected sex and contraception and looking for statistics on this topic. I found many statistics including:
• About 28% of Australian teenagers may be infected with Chlamydia
• Most teenagers do not practice safe sex
• One in four teens have had sexual intercourse without using a condom
• More the 2/3 of all teens who have a baby wont graduate from high school

These statistics were slightly disturbing and I wanted to try and make the point that teen and underage sex was not cool, it was not fun and it can have a massive impact on your life.
I had an idea for a series of four magazine spreads two aimed at females aged 13-15 and two aimed at males of the same age group. I made mock-ups of these and came up with the slogan; Underage sex. It’s not fun. These mock-ups would be changed before the finished product but I just wanted to get my ideas out on paper.

I designed these spreads using colours and pictures that would appeal to my target market such as pink and purple and blue and green. I displayed the innocent picture on one page with a caption underneath of what they were doing for example “they are celebrating her 14th birthday” on the next page it would state a shocking fact such as “she has Chlamydia”. This was followed by a statistic and the slogan of the campaign.

I then printed of one of the mock-ups and produced it to a focus group. The focus group consisted of six people both female and male, aged from 13 to 15. I asked a series of questions including:
• Why do you think teenagers are having sex?
• Where do you get most of your information about sex?
• What do you know about Sexually Transmitted Infections?
• When do you feel is the right age and situation to have sex?

I then asked them questions about the mock-up magazine spread. What they liked about? What would they change? What was good and bad about it?

This was extremely helpful as I was able to gain an understanding of how my target market perceived sex. They thought people were starting to have sex at a younger age, such as 13. The group also thought there were many factors as to why teenagers and younger people were exploring sexual activity such as peer pressure, influence from television and media, wanting to feel older, wanting to feel cool and so they can brag to their friends.

None of these reasons were acceptable, underage sex never is. So I thought ok I’m going to make a difference and make teens realise that it isn’t fun, it’s not cool, what happens on T.V does not happen in real life and having sex wont make you any older then you are.

Taking the information I gained from research and my focus group I have started to work on how I can make the impact I want and make people realise the consequences of underage, unsafe sex.

Create pages using a page layout application.

This Assessment was very interesting to complete.

I chose to create a set of products to promote an annual ball and charity ball. I designed the invitation, the auction catalogue and a history booklet.

I have changed slightly from my original idea.

The theme of the ball was Black and White Masquerade. I followed this theme by using a black and white colour scheme and using the mask motif throughout the products.

I wanted to have a simple and elegant theme to the work and also keep it corporate and as easy to use as possible.

I had to think very hard about how to display the images and type together so they looked presentable and aesthetically pleasing.

I used Chopin Script for the headings, Champaign and Limousin's for sub headings and calibre for the body text. I used these fonts as they worked well together and also worked well with the overall theme. I looked at using different types but decided on the ones I used because of the reasons above.

I found it difficult to find a good balance between text and graphics, however after feedback from my teacher I was able to create layouts that used less imagery but still had a great effect. I started to work with negative space and liked the way it turned out.

I learnt a lot from this assessment. I learnt how to look at my work from a different angle and how not be so safe all the time. I also improved with my illustrator techniques by learning how to create realistic looking vectors, however my mask does not look photo realistic but I tried and will continue to work on this new skill. I also learnt a bit more about working with negative space and not going over the top with motifs and themes. I learnt more about how to layout documents in indesign and would like to do more work on this and get better at this skill.

I liked to overall completed product but as with every project can still see things I would like to work on or change, however I am happy with the progress I have made.

Charity Event Gala Ball.

I’m thinking of doing three products relating to a charity event which will run for a week, starting with a gala ball.

The products will consist of packaging for a gift box/bag, and products which will appear in the bag which will include a booklet detailing the charities’ and the event’s history and a brochure listing events and promotions that are happening throughout the week of the fundraising. These gift bags would be given to guests as they leave the Ball so they need to be appealing and hold as much information as possible so the guest has everything they need to enjoy the fundraising week and support the charity the best they can.

The gift box/bag will need to be atheistically pleasing and have the name of the charity and the event appear on it. It may also have basic information about the event or what is in the gift box, if there are sponsors of events these will also appear on the packaging. However there will not be a large amount of type on this products.

The booklet will also need to be aesthetically pleasing, however it’s main purpose is to inform guests on the history of the charity and the event and other information which will be useful. At the moment I am thinking of a 6-8 page booklet but this could change.

The brochure will list the events of the fundraising week. This will included all events, where and when they are held, what they involve, who they are held by as well as other information on how to support the charity and become involved with it or the events of coming years.

I have not yet thought of a charity so images and colours may be decided depending of the type of charity or the theme of the ball and events. However I am thinking of pink, blue, black, white and gold. These colours stand out as they are simple and classy and I am thinking of using a corporate, classic style.
